homeopathic genealogy: as ancestors get more distant, their effect should be more powerful

Edited from a conversation with a friend:

mary: so among the things I’ve found out: I’m about 1 homeopathic amount Jewish, same goes for Naragansett (and related) native Americans from CT/RI and Long Island, and about as much Nottoway Cherokee, which is different from “real” Cherokee. All in the range of 13thish or 14th great grandparents.
lisa: interesting
mary: it’s academically interesting, but once you go far back you have hundreds and hundreds of grandparents, so it’s not especially relevant.
mary: just interesting.
lisa: yeah
mary: 131072 grandparents at the same level as the jewish and the native american ones
mary: (just did the math)

So for my nieces and their children? Double that number. Then double it again for the kids.

But it’s still interesting.

  1. Dude, I was raised Catholic. 😉

(Though perhaps because Mom was a convert, perhaps because we were in a super-accepting, loving parish, I don’t remember the whole guilt thing. In fact, I still don’t really understand the theology, just the hymns and Easter egg hunts.)

  2. The National Lampoon did a send-up of the Baltimore Catechism in the 70s.The first question:
    Q. Why did God make me?
    A. He made me to feel guilty.
