“Our Sun is a second- or third-generation star. All of the rocky and metallic material we stand on, the iron in our blood, the calcium in our teeth, the carbon in our genes were produced billions of years ago in the interior of a red giant star. We are made of star-stuff.” – Carl Sagan
And Neil deGrasse Tyson worded it a bit differently in the first episode of Cosmos, which Owen and I re-re-re-watched tonight.
Then Owen said, with a sigh, “I don’t believe him.”
I paused the video. “Why don’t you believe that?”
“Because we come from DNA then through mommies.”
I asked how the stuff that becomes DNA gets into sperm and eggs. He’s still thinking about that.
But you know what? He questions authority when an explanation seems implausible. That’s an astounding skill to have at his disposal.
